This term refers to a type of fabric with a checkered texture that when torn, does not fray. Used in nylon or polyester clothing, it incorporates wide fibers interspersed with narrower fibers, to form small boxes in the material.
The idea behind this fabric is that the tears do not spread, that is, when they meet the wider fibers the tear stops. The fibers are made of a polymer that is stretched to the maximum until it becomes hard. At this point the material is at the maximum point of tension. It is then cut into very thin slices to make threads and then the fabric.
This method makes the fabric incredibly resistant. You can make a hole with the tip of a nail, but you can't easily open it. It is easy to distinguish this fabric by its checkered texture.
