This term refers to a type of fabric with a checkered texture that does not fray when torn. Used in nylon or polyester clothing, it incorporates wide fibers interspersed with narrower fibers, in order to form small boxes in the material.
The idea behind this fabric is that the tears do not spread, that is, when they meet the widest fibers the tear stops. The fibers are made of a polymer that is stretched to the maximum until it becomes hard. At this point the material is at its maximum tension point. It is then cut into very thin slices to make threads and then the fabric.
This method makes the fabric incredibly resistant.
