This term refers to a type of fabric with a checkered texture that when torn, does not fray. Used in nylon or polyester clothing, it incorporates wide fibers interspersed with narrower fibers, to form small boxes in the material.
The idea behind this fabric is that tears do not spread, that is, when they encounter the wider fibers, the tear stops. The fibers are made of a polymer that is stretched to its maximum until it becomes hard. At this point, the material is at its maximum stress point. It is then sliced very thinly to make yarn and subsequently the fabric.
This method makes the fabric incredibly resistant. You can make a hole with the tip of a nail, but you cannot easily open it. It is easy to distinguish this fabric by its checkered texture.
